FAQ

The Value of on-Demand Software
High costs and quick return on investment (ROI) are key concerns for organizations, both large and small. Deploying on premise enterprise software provides enormous value to organizations, but requires upfront investment and continued expense for hardware and internal resources.  Some organizations have the infrastructure to easily support on-premise solutions, but many do not.  For those organizations, ROI and reduced cost can be achieved via an on-Demand delivery model.

On-Demand software requires no hardware purchases, software installations, network setup or ongoing system upgrades from the customer’s perspective. All you need is a web browser to access the application online. With this model, start up fees and implementation time are greatly reduced, helping you to realize the value of your LIMS solution faster.

What is a LIMS?
A Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is a software system used in labs for the management of samples, laboratory users, instruments, standards and other laboratory functions.  It automates laboratory processes from sample login/tracking, sample testing, to final result and report generation.  Furthermore, a LIMS integrates with instrumentation, robotics, and barcode readers to eliminate timely and error-prone manual data entry, thereby simplifying the laboratory workflow, improving data quality and increasing productivity. The system can also automatically check final results against specifications and flag any issues immediately to the relevant personnel. Intro to LIMS.

What is Thermo Scientific LIMS-on-Demand?
On-Demand software is gaining momentum in a variety of applications and industries. It is delivered by an application service provider (ASP) which users access via a web browser. The ASP is responsible for all aspects of the software including maintenance, upgrades, and security. Additional fees may be associated with any implementation, training, and configuration services the user requires.

Thermo Scientific LIMS-on-Demand is a recurring subscription based model hosted from our secure datacenter and delivered via a web browser.  With LIMS-on-Demand, lab personnel can focus on their core competencies without the additional responsibility of maintaining lab software and databases. Web access enables rapid deployment because site installation is not required. Anytime, anywhere system access delivers identical applications and data to workers regardless of location.

What are the Benefits of LIMS-on-Demand?
Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
With LIMS-on-Demand, Thermo Fisher Scientific hosts and maintains a pre-built hardware and software infrastructure and allows users access to it for a monthly fee.  This approach eliminates the need for you to purchase software licenses and hardware. It also eliminates the soft costs associated with installations and the continuing cost of maintenance and administration. This reduces your time to "go-live" and enables you to realize the value of your LIMS faster. Our global professional services team is committed to partnering with you to ensure a smooth and effective deployment.

Focus on Your Core Competency
LIMS-on-Demand frees you from the responsibility of installing and maintaining the software, which means that you no longer have to devote internal IT resources to making sure that your applications work properly. Database tuning, backups, critical operating system and LIMS updates, are all managed by Thermo Fisher directly. As a result, your internal resources are not required to schedule upgrades and new feature implementations. In addition to these cost savings, your IT resources can focus on your organization’s other strategic initiatives and you have the peace of mind that your laboratory data is in safe hands.

Access Anywhere Anytime
Users no longer have to be onsite or connected to your corporate network via a VPN in order to use LIMS-on-Demand. LIMS-on-Demand allows you to access your data anywhere you have an Internet connection and a personal computer through a secure connection.  LIMS-on-Demand brings the laboratory to your fingertips anytime, anywhere.

Is My Data Secure with LIMS-on-Demand
Absolutely! We have partnered with OpSource, a top-level Tier III-certified hosting provider, to leverage their SAS70 Type II certified data centers. These data centers have 24x7x365 CCTV and onsite guards, and OpSource uses biometric two-factor authentication to ensure no unauthorized personnel can physically get near our systems. All systems are redundantly architected: power, HVAC, and servers. All data is continuously replicated to separate geographic locations, so that even in the event of a large-scale disaster, our customers' data is safe.

What’s the Difference between a Perpetual License Model and On-Demand
Critical differences between an on-Demand model and traditional perpetual license model are driving the adoption of on-Demand. In the traditional model of software delivery, the customer acquires a perpetual license and assumes responsibility for managing the software. A perpetual license is paid for upfront and does not expire. There is a higher upfront cost associated with the purchase of the license, as well as implementation and ongoing maintenance. Furthermore, depending on the complexity of the laboratory operations, on-premise software can take a longer time to deploy so organizations may not realize the value of their LIMS as quickly as on-Demand.  With On-Demand, users rent the software and maintain ownership of the data.  All hardware and software maintenance is included in the fee; however this burden is managed by Thermo Fisher.
